Unit 10413
Category: Cut dug in 2004
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Pit,robbing pit
Data Category Information: Description: pit
Discussion: Cut of probable pit. Definition of edges diffuse in places, affected quite badly by animal burrows, base and sides hard to recognise in places as fill so similar to material into which pit cut.
Pit appears to be filled with loamy material which probably came from cut originally, as material similar. Also appears to be deliberately backfilled, there are no lenses/horizon indicating silting etc,
Function of pit uncertain, cuts hearth F1507, may be associated with end life of that. Obsidian point (spear??) found, possibly this pit is location of cleared out obsidian cache/tool cache *flint also found). Alternatively obsidian point may be a deliberate deposit, marking end life of hearth or cache?
Recognition: Cut visible in plan, truncates hearth F1507.
Definition: Cut clear in plan, less so base - colour and feature differences.
Execution: Trowel, brush
Condition: Dry
Shape: irregular oval. Teardrop
Sides: Irregular, south west undercut then concave, E and N steep and concave.
Base Break: Sharper break to N and E, shallow to SW
Base: Concave, slopes slightly to E
Orientation: E-W
