Unit 10476
Category: skeleton dug in 2004
Area: South
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: LH writes:
This juvenille skeleton was scattered throughout the burial pit but within the N-S burial cut. Several vertical layers of bone were evident with the lowest bone lying adjacent to the articulated adult pelvis of 10499. Nearly all bones of the juvenille skeleton were represented in the scatter. The absence of cranial elements was noted. 3 deciduous teeth are the only elements found from above the neck. The fusion pattern of the elements suggest an age of 4-5 years. A few adult elements, mainly cervical vertebrae, a few ribs, right and left patellae and 2 thumb elemtns were found scattered among the juvenille bones. A stone figurine was found in the northern area of the first layer of juvenille (and a few adult) bones.
GSC writes:
Juvenille bones originally thought to be associated with E-W grave F1515. Both fills and cut edges were highly difficult to determine due to midden-like deposits within a feature cut into midden deposits. It wasnt until the removal of a Mother Goddess figurine (!) and the subsequent discovery of a partially articulated adult male within [10468] that it became clear that those bones actually related to a N-S grave cut. At some point, a juvenille burial must/may have filled this cut, with the said individual being disturbed and removed at a later stage. At this point, if not before, the adult below was disturbed, with nearly all of his vertebrae finding themselves within the disturbed backfill along with the very disarticulated remains of the juvenille. At some point, the Mother Goddess figurine was deposited along with the human remains. This figurine could have literally come from anywhere, and due to its importance, cannot be argued with any certainaty. It may well have been a grave goos associated with the adult below, and it may well have been associated with the juvenille. And as the graves are cut into midden deposits, it may well have come from there. We will never know, but its fair to remark on its significance, and most likely represents a very special deposit.
