Unit 10488
Category: layer dug in 2004
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: grave fill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: burial; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 0.68m EW x 0.44m NS x 0.13m deep
Discussion: As mentioned overleaf (10488) was not clearly defined until layer (10478)was removed. This was done out of strategraphic order but contamination between (10488) and (10474) was not an issue as the clear definition between both deposits became obvious upon excavation.
Removal of (10488) revealed the remains of an infant burial, skeleton (10495) and (11300).
Recognition: only clearly recognised after the removal of layer (10474) ie out of strategraphic order, due to the heavy disturbance caused to the feature by animal burrows and F1524
Definition: clearly defined after the removal of layer (10474) distinctly different to (11300) and the surrounding layers and midden deposits
Execution: trowel, brush, handshovel
Condition: dry and sunny
Consistency: soft
Colour: dark brown
Texture: sandy silt
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: very frequent salt flecks throughout the fill, occ charcoal
Post-depositional Features: badly truncated on the eastern side by animal burrows and F1514
Basal Boundary: clearly defined on the north, west and south. More diffuse on the east
