Unit 10705
Category: skeleton dug in 2004
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: skeleton
Data Category Information: none
Dimensions: 65 cm E-W / 22cm N-S
Discussion: Burial was discovered 06 July 04 during excavation after 4040 area was expanded. Pieces of the cranium and some teeth were disturbed and later bagged and removed by MAP in order to expose the rest of the skeleton. Much of the skull is missing as are the hand and the feet. Some infant phalanges were found next to the the left ilium. Thought to be Byzantine due to the the depth and orientation fo the burial. No clear grave cut was discerned- the pit dug was arbitrary and only excavated in order to expose the burial. Elements of an adult were also found. Including a phalanx left in situ above the right radius and a premolar found in the back dirt. There is also a fragment of adult bone, what appears to be a piece of transverse process. This was also left in situ next to the right femur. Little was found in and around the burial. Soil was dry and contained gravel size clumps- many roots found throughout.
Conditions and weather: dry and hot with little breeze

Surface Modifications: No clear grave cut was identified. There was extensive root damage to the skeleton and should be clear in the photo- with roots throughout the bone and grave. Burial was close to the surface which may account for its poor condition
