Unit 10835
Category: Cluster dug in 2004
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: cluster
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: burial; Material: mix; Deposition: primary deposition; Basal Spit: flint; antler
Description: cluster of objects found in association with skeleton 10813. FAST TRACK
Discussion: cluster of 5 flint objects and one antler artifact found in association with skeleton 10813 (burial feature 1709). The objects were placed below the right tibia of 10813 and above the right ribs of that skeleton. Thus the context of this cluster is well defined. The objects seem to have been placed on the right side of the body at the interface between chest and stomach.
Such a group of of flints in association with a skeleton seems to be unique so far (Tristan Carter) and. The antler point found with it may have been used for pressure flaking (Rebecca Daly to be further investigated).
Below 10835 there was a reddish brown deposit with paralel white lines that could represent wood remains. It was sampled as sample 1 in unit 10831. However it seems more likely to me that this discoloration results from leaching of the bone (see diary Bleda During 24-07-04).
