Unit 11009
Category: layer dug in 2004
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Midden,Pit fill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: pit; Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion:
The upper portion of this feature was excavated as units 11005 and 11006, then continued as 11008. We are now excavating in arbitrary layers, as there is a strong potential for this feature to emerge as a very deep, bell-shaped pit, (possibly a late storage pit for grain, etc. [Ian]). The base of unit 11008 appeared to indicate this shapek, as the fill appears to undercut the more solid 11005 material.
Sides of pit are cleaned. Can see stratified clayey deposits of space 232. Also wall to N appears. Meterial of fill is very gravelly with large fragments of burned clay. Large fragments noted in NW. Part of wall seems very solid (part of matrix of space 232?) Long animal hole from W. edge around edge of pit in N and W. Clayey fill in center of unit gives the impression of near bottom -- but this is probably an illusion. When will it end?
Very few non building/oven material. A few bones. Polished stone axe fragment.
FAST TRACK
EXCAVATED 18/07/04
Recognition: Continuation of pit feature 1751 revealed at higher levels (11006, 11008)-- sediment is distinctive from surrounding fill
Definition: Surrounded by sediments of different color, density, and inclusions
Execution: Use of trowel and hoe to remove significant portions; some brushing for better definition
Condition: Some dampness due to rainshowers of 16/7/04
Consistency: Friable to firm
Colour: Reddish beige-- mottled
Texture: Clayey loam
Bedding: Layered, discontinuous bedding (unit is mottled)
Inclusions: Mud brick, bone, charcoal, ash
Post-depositional Features: Some bioturbation due to small root systems and animal burrowing; compaction
Basal Boundary: Arbitrary
