Unit 11900
Category: Cluster dug in 2005
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: bin fill
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: bin; Material: seeds; Deposition: primary deposition
Discussion: these upper bin fill contains several discrete concentrations of what appears to be mainly (charred) barley grain. In discussion with Doru Bogdan the decision was taken to dig this upper field as a single unit and to take each barley concentration as a separate sample within it (see list of S1 - S4). These 'pockets' of barley were apparent amongst lumps of burnt building material in the upper bin fill.
Once this barley samples were removed and the whole area cleaned, new (different) concentrations of charred plant remains became apparent, and a new unit was created in order to excavate these.
Recognition: identified as the fill of the bin
Definition: defined by the walls of the bin
Execution: trowel and brush
Consistency: fairly loose/ friable
Colour: varied from black (concentrations of chared plant remains) to orange/red
Texture: silty clay
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: mostly barley grains, some whole (see discussion)

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
X Finds Material: nothing recorded
