Unit 11911
Category: Cluster dug in 2005
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Peas concentration
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: bin; Material: peas; Deposition: primary deposition
Discussion: this unit consists of a concentration of charred peas (Pisum sativum) in fine dark brown soil matrix. The density of peas is very high and the deposit stands out clearly from the surrounding bin fill.
The main concentration of peas, detected initially, consists of a 'pocket' c. 10 cm deep against the south wall of the bin. The concentration continues a little to the north as the basal boundary of the deposit slopes upwards.
Removal of the pea deposition exposed some fragments of animal bone all set in a compact dark burnt fill. Exposure of these finds and the different fill defined an end to unit 11911.
Recognition: By black colour and high seed density
Definition: inside bin, discrete area within bin fill
