Unit 12616
Category: Layer dug in 2006
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: mud-brick grave lining
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: burial; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 2.04 m E-W, 0.85 m N-S
Discussion: After the removal of fill 12397 and skeleton 12398 it became clear that there was a lining of mud-bricks within the burial cut-12396. This comprised a single line of unevenly sized light grey mud-bricks (except for at the foot of the grave where there were two 'rows') There was no indication of any mortar- the bricks appear to have been simply laid around the cut.
The mud-bricks were removed and sampled. A considerable amount of material was recovered from the bricks including animal bone, stone and a fragment of a clay ball. This material is presumably redeposited and at least partially Neolithic.
It is possible that there was originally more than one course of bricks that have subsequently been stripped away/ eroded.
