Discussion: Note that upper brick and mortar was taken out with 1559, the flotation sample for 1558 consist of the lower brick (see sketch) in unit 1556. After removal of 1556 it was clear that the underlying was beyond N edge of 1556 - it was accordingly taken as part of 1559- however further cleaning of the section indicated it was still relatively small brick and another lay beneath it, significantly set slightly lower than the adjacent bricks. Therefore the blocking did constitute done but should probably be seen as contemporary with construction of N section of wall, perhaps to ensure this was .... with existing courses 1560and 1562.
