Unit 17247

Category: Layer    dug in 2008

Area: Trench 5

Interpretive Categories: mudbrick wall

Data Category Information: none

Dimensions: unclear until excavated

Discussion: Mudbrick of wall 2429. See discussion of 2429. At least 9-10 layers of mudbrick on top of each other.

NMR and DSE 05/08/13 until 13/08/13:

The unit’s dimensions have been drawn arbitrary to get a better understanding of the connections between F. 5074 and F. 2429. In the north it was limited by the northern trench limit. To the west by an artificial cut on the same vertical level as the western boarder of F. 3339. The eastern limit was first at the same vertical line as F. 2425 and afterwards extended to the leftovers to the very east. Only the southern boarder was related to the (partly missing) interfill between F. 5074 and F 2429. The wall of unit 17247 was built in an irregular horizontal sequence of firm bricks and crumbly mortar layers. A thin layer of white plaster could be seen on the outside of the north wall of Building 107 in the artificial east profile of F. 2429. This kind of layer reappears at unit 31124. Unfortunately the area in between is disturbed by a later pit. A suggested connection between those two layers is most likely but not proven, yet. Special founds were mostly found in the eastern corner of the unit. Inside the extension of the unit were high amounts of bones excavated. At least a few of the bones could be from human remains (one tooth and parts of a foot). Additional were burned grains and charcoal pieces along with a couple of small damaged obsidian blades found.

Post-depositional Features: truncated by 15306, 16823 / disturbances by later pits animal burrows

Basal Boundary: unclear / flat with a slight slope to the north, compensised by a thicker layer of mortar. In order to achieve a uniform flat unit layer for documentation the basal boundary to the south was made arbitrarily.
