Discussion: Earliest use of hearth 7402 which consists of well -fired ash laminations & remnants of a plaster base. Base survives especially was in S & SE part of the hearth indicating rake out concentrated on N & west. Fill was relatively sterile and well burnt, leaving a fine, ashy deposit in the base of the hearth. Note that an earlier hearth, f. 7426 sits below f. 7402 and part of this hearth may have been removed with u.19183 due to the similarity of these deposits. 

Consistency: firm/friable 

Colour: Mid orange/grey with light gray plaster 

Texture: ashy, silty clay 

Bedding: Laminated 

Inclusions: Frequent fine ash, occasional charcoal flecks
