Unit 19436

Category: Layer    dug in 2012

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: burial infill

Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: burial; Deposition: heterogeneous

Dimensions: E-W 0.75 x N-S 0.65 x 0.1 m thick

Discussion: The burial was found and exposed in 2008. It is not known whether any soil was taken out at that time. The top part of the skeleton was exposed and then covered by some cloth and soil. The top of the layer was disturbed, both by post Neolithic erosion and by being exposed earlier during the excavation. As a result the borders of t he layer was diffuse and some material may have been mixed. A pottery sherd in the top of the layer may be a sign of this. The unclear boundary of the layer resulted in the layer "spilling over" the cut that was a bit smaller In plan than the fill.
The fill had pieces of hard, brick like material in a light grey color, and bits of charcoal in it.

Recognition: recognized as burial as bones were exposed on surface.

Definition: the layer had a different texture compared to surrounding material, but boundary very uncertain.

Execution: Excavated with trowel and brush. All soil went to flotation sample, except 0.1 L that went to archive sample.

Condition: Very dry.

Consistency: Compact, brittle in places, softer in others.

Colour: greyish, light brown

Texture: sandy clay

Bedding: massive

Inclusions: human skeleton, other bones, lumps of light colored compact clay (former construction details from other place?), charcoal in bits, obsidian, shell.

Post-depositional Features: one animal burrow, one small rectangular disturbance filled with same orangy material as nearby Byzantine burials (perhaps shovel mark).

Basal Boundary: slight slope towards middle.

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
