Unit 20045
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: hearth floor
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: hearth; Material: dark grey clay; Deposition: multiple
Description: Compound layer of hearth composed of very friable burnt clay with charcoal and small plaster inclusions located under superstructure u.20042, and appears to lip up onto the next superstructure layer. It is heavily burned and eroded near edge of hearth.
Discussion: Unit was recognized under the superstructure (unit 20042) of hearth feature 3436 as it lipped up onto the sides of the hearth, as well as formed the uppermost layer of the center of the feature. It is a more friable layer than u.20042 and contains more evidence of burning and erosion. This layer may be composed of a series of packed and melted floors, but due to heat it may be impossible to separate out the individual sequence. During excavation is was determined that the layer is distinguishable and could be taken out to reveal different, ashier layers below (u.20046).
