Unit 20617
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: 1st course of makeup, floor
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: oven; Material: mortar; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: It was a very poorly preserved layer above U.19598. Previous excavators noticed in 2012 that the burnt layer was destroyed by wheelbarrows and walking people. For this same reason this layer was destroyed too. It was preserved only in nothern part and southern part of oven.
It was probably the higest layer of the oven but unfortunately everything above was destroyed so I can't say that it was really. However above this layer in the section there are visible a few layers of makeup and burnt layers but only above the center.
The layer was on this same level with the top part of the wall. This is why I wrote about alternatively interpretation. They could have used this layer of makeup like a floor or a base for a new oven or hearth (which is visible in section).
