Unit 20639
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Hearth wall
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: hearth; Material: plaster; Basal Spit: unpainted
Discussion: This unit was found immediatly beneath a make-uplayer which covered the whole hearth. This unit constitutes the walls surrounding the heart during its second usage phase. It was built over make-up layer 20641 and partly in underlying floor level as well, or rather the ash ring 20693. During the construction of these walls the hearth was made rectangular and quite symmetrically so (see sketch). It was renewed later by 20630.
Consistency: Compact, and quite hard, required some pressure with trowel
Colour: Brownish grey
Texture: Clay, and plastering material
Bedding: Massive, although color alteration the last 2 cm, but this can probably be due to postdepositional compression
Inclusions: Plaster make-up
Post-depositional Features: Root etching and animal furrowing
Basal Boundary: Diffuse in the edges towards the middle, but clear and quite abrupt otherwise.
