Interpretive Categories: Burnt fill in hearth

Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: hearth; Deposition: homogeneous

Discussion: The unit was located as a circular fill in the middle of the hearth. It was excavated with trowel. The soil reddish brown of a lighter nuance, and was more loose in the top and hard in bottom with inclusions of phytoliths, which most probably came from the next unit.

The unit was discovered as a round burnt fill in the middle of the hearth. It was thickest in the middle as well. It should be phased with 20693 interfeaturally, which made its boundaries. This burnt fill is as the other in this hearth clean and only consisting of redburnt soil, and some remnants in this case of plaster, and ash lenses, quite homogenous. It was probably the centre of the hearth, explaining these characteristics.

Below is the cut for the hearth and folloving layers, below next floor level. This is rich in phytoliths, why bottom of this unit has some inclusions of this aswell.

Consistency: Loose but got harder in bottom

Colour: (light) reddish brown.

Texture: Silt

Bedding: Fine layered with ash lenses

Inclusions: Crushed stone, phytoliths, makeup

Post-depositional Features: Root etching!

Basal Boundary: Gradual but clear
