Unit 20813

Category: Layer    dug in 2013

Area: South

Interpretive Categories: Make up and floor

Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: floor (packing only)

Discussion: This unit consists of several thin layers, which were not possible to separate during excavation. At least in patches, along the eastern wall, a trampled surface was discernible, but it was not possible to follow it as a continuous interface between layers. In the southern corner this was visible more clearly, as a surface with probable phytolites (no clear pattern, only a surface). The trampled surface contained more charcoal and grains of sand (?), organic substances (?), and burnt clay (?) – I could feel this as a less smooth and partly harder surface when touching the trowels edge. In patches there also seemed to be another surface of plaster of light yellowish color, similar to u.20815, but it was not possible to follow as a continuous surface, only small lenses. The trampled surface will hopefully be visible as a greyish lens in the most eastern part (towards the wall) of the section which will be saved and drawn in the southern part of the building, at the end of F.3508 (although probably not drawn this season). The trampled surface had small (tiny!) flakes of red pigment in two colors or nuances. In the northeast corner it was dark red and in other spots along the eastern wall it was bright red, the same nuance as the paintings on the wall plaster.

Consistency: Quite soft, but requiering some preassure

Colour: Light brown

Texture: Silt (sandy silt?)

Bedding: Compound: 1,5 cm make-up - trampled horizon and thin lenses of lighter material (plaster-like) - 0,5 cm of make-up.

Inclusions: Seeds in southern part? Phytolites as surface in southern part. Charcoal 1-3% through-out the layer. Wall plaster fragments (?) along the eastern wall.

Post-depositional Features: Trampled surface in the middle of the layer/unit (ca 0,005 m above underlying plaster u.20815).

Basal Boundary: Sharp distinction towards new plaster layer (u.20815) but trampled (se 6.) )

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

X Finds Material: nothing recorded
