Unit 20818

Category: Layer    dug in 2013

Area: South

Interpretive Categories: pit fill,Possible burial infill

Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: pit; Deposition: heterogeneous

Description: Not fully excavated in 2013.

Discussion: This infill, which is extremely compact and has been removed by mattock, was from the start thought to be overlayering u. 20823 in F. 7008. Only as I got down to the skeleton sk. 20824 of F. 7008, and actually first a phytolite belonging to a possible third burial feature, on which sk. 20824 seemed to be partially resting on, I could see that u. 20818 was older/previous to u. 20823. The fact that the stratigraphic order was not recognized from the start means that there is a mixture with u. 20823 material in the flotated u. 20818.

So far, 120 litres has been removed and sent to flotation. As the human remains team did not have time to lift more skeletons during this season (2013), the unit/feature was not completely excavated, in case a skeleton would be encountered. The feature and unit is left for the next season.

Note on total deposit volume:
120 liters were taken in samples in 2013, but as the layer is not fully excavated, this is not yet the total volume.

Update 2014: There is no skeleton present in this cut, so the feature was determined to be just a pit-- perhaps to retrieve a skeleton?
The total deposit volume should not be considered final.

Consistency: Firm, very compact

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

X Finds Material: nothing recorded

Finds Material Stored: nothing recorded
