Unit 20924
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Bin fill
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: bin; Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion: The bin fill was removed very slowly (it took me, JH, 3 days) because of the many things visible inside it. Because of them being unusual we decided to x-find everything (see sketch). Every step was documented by 3d-photos.
This bin fill is peculiar of its character; it is very similar to the building infill u.20481. However, it contained a lot of special finds, and their placement and orientation in the bin was really visible by the breaks in removing centimeters at the time. The 3d-modelling will give more room for post-exc interpretation of this feature. This fill was probably part of the filling/closing of the house. It is debatable whether the finds in it were deposited with the fill or prior to it. Some of them were definitely part of the filling, such as the worked stone X8. All finds were "floating" in the fill. A reasonable reconstruction of events of filling the bin, is that they lay chunks of horn core in the bin in the same event but consciously placed them in a special manner.
Obviously the horn cores were an important part of the fill, and in this sense they should be seen as a specific fill element of it. It is also possible they were a deposition prior to the fill or a part of the feature in its active use phase, even if they were floating in the soil. They could even have been attached to the centerpiece F.3688. Other interesting finds, such as an unusual worked stone and stone bead, were found. Otherwise, obsidian and worn bone fragments testify that the soil could have been associated with the building infilling moment, as well as the stratigraphy.
Consistency: Soft and friable, more or less. The softness and firmness varies in different parts of the bin.
Colour: Grey, orange, brown
Texture: Clay, and in softer part silty clay
Bedding: Compund. This layer was compund and more or less soft/friable
Inclusions: Plaster collapsed from wall feature 3688 in SE corner
Post-depositional Features: -
Basal Boundary: Layer below is firm and is on the same level as the floor around the bin

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
X Finds Material: nothing recorded
