Unit 20956
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Deliberate fill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: pit; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: This unit was a fill consisting of large ground stone fragments of which two nice tools were complete (X1 and HP). The fill was slightlly spread (out from cut) and unrecognizable in SE corner of cut, covering some more than cut in the northen part. The whole fill was sampled for flotation and archive.
As mentioned the fill mostly consisted of stones. The reasaon for not being able to identify it as a cluster or at least the possibility of this, was due to miscommunication between the excavators. However observation prior to removal were that the stones were packed in this confined space. They might even have been placed in a more organized manner, but this is hard to say. This fill however is due to its content in general here interpreted as a deposition of 1) fully functional tools and 2) quern fragments. As such it is interesting why this unit was made. Two or three animal bone fragments were also found.
Consistency: Stones and brown soil, easy to remove with trowel
Colour: Light brown
Texture: Moist silt
Bedding: Massive homogenous soil, mostly between ground stones
Inclusions: Large sized ground stone
Post-depositional Features: None specific
Basal Boundary: Clear but due to learning reasons and miscommunication a bit too much was removed in basal boundary. However the fill stopped at a black layer in S and orange soil in N.
