Unit 20980

Category: Cut    dug in 2013

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: Cut for fire spot

Data Category Information: Description: pit

Discussion: Oval cut, very shallow, in the NW part of platform F.7114. This cut was completely filled with U.20961, an ashy layer rich in burnt plant remains. The SE edge of the cut is ca. 4cm lower than the other edges. The walls of the cut are very clayish (pale reddish brown) and no floor levels are visible in section in it, which raises the possiblity of this clay having been intentionally placed on the walls of the pit to preserve the heat and prevent the fire from spreading to other areas of the house. The bottom of the cut has a sandy texture and seems to be the same deposit as the building infill localised in the section of F.7113 under the plaster floors.
