Discussion: The band of clay is deposited on top of an external hearth lining constructed to contain the heat and ash deposits in addition to the external lining.
This lining unit postdates the external hearth clay lip and it probably represents a repairment / improvement episode of the hearth, giving the structural cracks visible on the external clay lip.
This unit is sitting on top of U.21174 and is therefore quite a late addition to the hearth. Punctuated traces of gypsum on top of this unit suggest that the hearth lip might have been plastered.
