Unit 21343
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Dirty floors next to hearth
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: basin; Material: dark grey clay; Deposition: composite (floors/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation); Basal Spit: unpainted
Discussion: Clean grey plaster floor of ca.1mm thickness (finishing coating) and brown make-up layer underneath (alluvial clay, ca.3-5mm thickness). Both the finishing coat and the make-up have been grouped within this unit number.
Under this unit lies another clean grey plaster floor showing signs of abundant gypsum reprecipitation. The reasons for this phenomenon are still unclear: changing water tables? Degradation of the plaster? Effect of heating?
Towards the south-central part of the unit a significant amount of sediment disturbance is aparent. Here, the floor was very irregular and had a compound layered bedding, mixed with ashes and alluvial clays. Through scraping we have identified what seems to be a cut of circular shape, the W edge of which has still to be defined as it lies under the U. 21355.
These floors are contemporary with the "step" F.7567, as they lip up against the base of this feature.
Consistency: Friable
Colour: Brownish grey
Texture: Silty clay
Bedding: Massive / compound layered
Inclusions: Microcharcoal
Post-depositional Features: Bioturbation (animal burrowing), gypsum reprecipitation
Basal Boundary: Constructional / anthropogenic, gradual, distinct, smooth, 5º slope towards S.
