Unit 21371
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Brick
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: brick; Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion: Bricks from the western wall of sp. 99. The wall contains of two parts, a younger and an older. The younger part was excavated in 2014. See also feature sheet 3678.
The bricks made in at least two different ways. They were both light yellow but had different consistency and inclusions. Only a small amount of bricks could be measured. A few had plaster on them and was probably reused.
The levels were not always easy to follow because of the lack of clear lines of mortar.
Level 1: highly eroded upper part of the wall. Light yellow soft clay mudbrick. 0,06 m thick brick in the middle of the wall.
Level 3: firm light yellow bricks with a high amount of sand in it. Inclusions: pebbles, plant remains. Also crumbly, soft, light yellow bricks on the top of the wall highly eroded. Two bricks of the middle of the wall could be measured: length 0,88 - 0,90 m, width 0,31 m, thickness: 0,08 m. Sample of crumbly brick was taken.
Level 5: Mostly light yellow, strong bricks with a high amount of sand in it. Inclusion: pebbles, burnt clay, plant remains. In the north was a crumbly light yellow brick, firm with quite a lot of pebbles, charcoal fragments, plant remains and burnt bricks. Length 0,90 m, width 0,31 m, thickness 0,09 m. In the South: two bricks on top of each other with no mortar in between. One of them, in the bottom, was the strong, light yellow type with a high amount of sand. The one on the top was of the firm, crumbly type with a high amount of pebbles. It was 0,77 m long, 0,06 - 0,08 m thick and 0,31 m wide.
Corner in South: A small line of infill between wall 3678 and the western wall of b. 49. could be seen. It was 0,42 m long and 0,01m wide. A lot of animal activity has disturbed the area. This infill disapeared/was not visible during the excavation of the rest of the wall (2014). The elevation was 1012,16 m.
Level 7: strong, light yellow bricks with a high amount of sand. All bricks looks the same in this level. One is clearly reused and have plaster on it. Inclusions: phytoliths and small fragments of charcoal, plant remains, burnt clay. The level was 6,9 m along. One brick could be measured, 0,82 x 0,33 x 0,08 m long. The vertical mortar line was 0,04 m thick and was of the same type as the mortar below.
Level 9: same type of brick as in 7. 2,00 m from the S corner was a unusuall brick. It was 0,10 m thick in its W corner & 0,05 m thick elswhere.
Level 11 & 12: These two levels were taken away together. It was disturbed by animals in some areas. The reason we took it away as one is because the levels of mortar & brick could not be followed. A reparation had been made in the middle of the wall and the level of mortar was hard to follow in that part of the wall. Both types of bricks were seem near this repaired patch. Elevation from S to N: 1 = 1,46 = 1012,18 m; 2 = 1,52 = 1012,10 m; 3 = 1,57 = 1012,05 m; 4 = 1,55 = 1012,07 m; 5 = 1,56 = 1012,06 m.
Level 13: Most of the mudbrick were made from sandy clay with a high amount of sand. As described in 7. in South: some of the bricks are crumbly on the top. No visible lines, vertical of mortar between the bricks.
The bricks are 0,05 - 0,06 m thick in this level.
Level 15: the strong light yellow type of sandy clay mudbricks can be seen. Inclusions: phytoliths, plant remains, charcoal, burnt clay. Some are reused, smaller in size. Also some crumbly and burnt bricks with more pebbles, plant remain.
The bricks contains a high amount of plant remains. They are rather thin in comparison to other houses. They are thus wider than the bricks in b. 49, N & W walls.
