Discussion: Mortar in western wall, sp. 99. Se also f. 3678 for more information. The mortar was not evenly distributed on the clay mudbricks. In some areas it was hard to follow the different mudbricks and mortar levels due to lack of mortar.
In many cases the mortar could only be seen on the eastern part of the brick & in the section. In some areas were a lot of phytoliths. The mortar differed a little in colour, texture & incusion. 16 'levels' of brick & mortar were removed. Mortar are described here:
Level 2: light grey with burnt clay fragments, charcoal, shell. Soft and made of ashes with some sand in it. 0,05 - 0,06 m thick. Visible only in parts of the wall.
Level 4: In the south: soft, grey, ashy. Inclusion: burnt clay, pebbles, small amount of shell. Mixed with sand.
Level 6: Firm, ashy and light grey. Inclusion: charcoal, burnt clay, pebbles. More silty than sandy. 2,7 m from the southern part and to the south: mortar can only be seen the eastern part. The mortar is here 0,05 - 0,1 m thick. From the southern corner to 2,2 m north of the corner: the mortar was only visible in patches on the bricks and in the section of the wall. The mortar was softier in the southern part than in the northern. Maybe because the levels above were eroded. Level: 6,9 m long.
Level 8: very thin layer of the light grey mortar. Inclusion: phytoliths, charcoal & burnt clay. Looks like the mortar previously described.
Level 10: 0,05 - 0,08 m thick layer. See 8. The mortar does not cover the whole surface of the bricks. Appears mostly in the eastern part of the bricks. The level TS about 0,60 m from the ground (top of u. 21542) in the northern corner, 0,54 m in the middle of the wall & 0,67 m in the southern corner.
Level 12: See description of brick 11 & 12.
Level 14: pretty thick layer of mortar in comparison to the others taken away. Seems to be more silty than sandy. Only appears partly on the bricks. Low amount of phytoliths. Some charcoal can be seen but not as much as in mortar layers below (after this wall ends). Plans remains & burnt clay.
Level 16: See level 14.

Colour: light grey 

Texture: silty & sandy ashes

Inclusions: phytoliths, charcoal, shell, burnt clay, pebbles 

Post-depositional Features: animal disturbance
