Unit 21534
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: 1st make-up layer of old hearth
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: hearth; Material: baked; Deposition: single
Discussion: First make up layer of old hearth F.7607 that was truncated by later fire installation F.7345. The E half of the hearth is preserved, including ashes and charcoal fragments on a fine layer of phytoliths that has been sampled for analysis. This deposit is sloping slightly towards the S.
The sediment has a bright orangish colour (oxidised clays) and contains inclusions of 2-3 cm of reutilised fragments of oven wall. The layer has a light brownish colour towards its base suggesting that its orange shade at the top is due to rubefaction.
