Discussion: This cut into the north wall formed a square in plan alcove. All sides of the alcove were coated in white plaster, like the face of the north wall. Originally it appeared that the alcove ended on top of the step feature, F.7657, however after excavating the step, it seemed more likely that the alcove was cut first. The base would have met a grey plaster floor layer, and the step was added later. The exact function of the alcove is unclear, but may have been decoration to the north wall and assisted the likely decorative function of the step feature.
