Unit 21593
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: North
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: gully; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: U. 21593 was recognized as a seperat unit due to its general shape (somewhat circular), its relationship to a feature wall (f. 7649 to the east and we often find pits located along wall boundaries), and most evidently by the concentration of animal bone visible from the top of the pit cut. This small pit may have been created quickly (given its relatively shallow depth) for the quick deposition of some bovine bone which was almost the only material recovered (three small fragmwnts of mini clay balls were also found). Unit 21593 was excavated using a fine trowel, wooden bone pick (as we thought we might encounter a skull or possibly horn cores) and a fine brush.
Consistency: soft- the soil appears highly organic and extremely soft once broken up
Colour: dark brown- fill is primarily dark brown with patches of bright orange and burnt blueish grey- indications the soil was heavily burned
Texture: silty loam- almost a granulated texture (like little balls) of compacted silty loam that easily break up into a fine powder
Bedding: massive- as is common with fill it’s an even mixture of soil and inclusions
Inclusions: charcoal
Post-depositional Features: bioturbation (rodent burroughs)
Basal Boundary: arbitrary- amorphous, indicavtive of the pits quick/ hasty creation and single use
