Unit 22120
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: burnt plaster room entrance, burnt plaster surface abutting east wall of b.131
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: raised area (platform); Material: mix (dark grey&white); Deposition: composite (floors/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation); Basal Spit: unpainted
Discussion: Unit 22120 was identified primarily through slight texture and color changes- abutting the eastern wall of b.131 which had a similar structure it was difficult to differentiate between the two at first. We began excavating u. 22120 under the idea that it was a plastered surface generally and some kind of floor specifically- but as we excavated it we realized our lens of burned infill (to the west) was lipping up against the unit instead of going underneath it. Further exposure of the unit revealed a distinct line of plaster along the western wall which connected to piece of plaster leading into the main room of building 131. These patches of plaster taken in combination with the partially demolished eastern wall strongly suggests that this unit (22120) is an entrance way from the main room of b.131 to our room which is most likely a later addition. This unit will be left for further excavation during the 2015 season.
Consistency: compact but soft- the unit is comprised of a soft/ fine sedimentary material but it is very compacted
Colour: very dark grey/ black- the majority of the unit is a very dark grey but segments give way to an extremely dark black brown and even pure black.
Texture: silty loam- fine silty loam material that has a very slight grit to it, not sandy- almost like the limestone marl we find in plasters
Bedding: massive- even if there were distinct layers the unit is too highly burned to distinguish them
Inclusions: charcoal
