Unit 22212
Category: Layer dug in 2015
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: wall plaster + mortar
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: plaster; Deposition: layered (wall plaster); Basal Spit: unpainted
Discussion: 22212 is the plaster on wall F2106. It was excavated as a single arbitrary unit since the post exposure erosion and the burning of B52 made it very patchy and unequaly preserved. In such conditions, it is impossible to follow a single layer on the preserved surface, or to connect it with the floor. Plaster was removed until reaching the bricks. Some mortar was also removed when it laid in top of the bricks in order to create relief next to the post F2172 and the wall F2032. Indeed this last was probably added at the same time as the first plaster in order to "dress" the naked wall and shape connection with surrounding features.
At the very bottom of wall F2106 another better preserved plaster layer appear to be in connection with the floor u22238 (plt F7638). This one IS NOT in connection with u22212. It seems to belong to a previous wall (on top of which F2106 was built).
Relation with the bucranium niche was impossible to document. Indeed, the modalities of the removal of the bucranium (conservational more than archaeological) did not offer the possibility to study the edge of the niche (destroyed in the process) Although, it should be noted that no plaster was seen within the niche. But some (single layer, maybe the first one) was removed from a part of the wall sloping into the bottom of the niche. This part of the wall was then covered by the bucranium. This may thus indicates that the bucranium niche is as old as the wall.
Please note that 15 liters were accidentaly dropped during process and thus are missing from the flotation.
Consistency: very loose to friable
Colour: white to blue-ish black (burnt) plaster, light yellowish brown make-up
Texture: silty plaster, silty clay make up
Bedding: compound layered (plaster and make up)
Inclusions: none
Post-depositional Features: many animal burrow going through wall F2106 ; differentially affected by burning of b52 ; strong post exposure erosion at the time of excavation
Basal Boundary: constructional, plaster layer (one of the first of wall F2106; in connection with u 22209 from plt F7638)

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
