Unit 23217
Category: Layer dug in 2017
Interpretive Categories: Infill between and above deposits,Pit Fill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: pit; Deposition: heterogeneous
Description: Floor packing, initially thought to be pit fill, in the centre of Building 17/
Discussion: This was a deposit, thrown and packed in an area of uneven different deposits to smooth that area out in preparation of the floor above, i.e. the earliest floor of Building 17. Little chuncks of plaster had been inserted in between the two deposits lying below: a medium grey deposit rich in charcoal, and a brown-dirty yellow deposit lying next to it. On top of them, and next to them in the west, there was this unit (23217), an off-white, light grey deposit, rich in lime plaster. This initially appeared as the fill of a scoop (Pit-cut F.8045), however, it soon became clear that this was regarding a positive rather than a negative feature; it added to the deposits below in order to level the surface in preparation for the new floor. In addition to the small chuncks of plaster, infilling the gap between the aforementioned deposits, a larger chunk of badly-prepared plaster was also used in the west of this small area, and on the top. U 23217 refers to these plaster chunks and the similar consistency levelled top.
