Data Category Information: Description: general levelling

Description: This unit is in the middle of space 170. It represents a crack in the packing for the earliest floor of Building 17 (U21873), which initially thought to be a pit cut. (See discussion below)

Discussion: U 23217 was initially understood as an oval Pit-cut, truncated in the North by F.8203. The upper layer was a homogenous fill, of off-white, off-grey colour, rich in lime-plaster. Upon the removal of this upper layer, it became obvious that this was not a pit-cut, but a crack among different deposits. Clearly, U 23217 was used to infill the spaces between two different depositis below, and to add to them in the West. The crack which was initially confidently identified as Pit-cut U.23218, was therefore a crack between different deposits used to level the deposits underneath for the construction of the earliest floor of Building 17.
