Unit 23220
Category: Layer dug in 2017
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Oven superstructure
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: oven; Material: brick&mortar; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: This unit was exposed directly below the platform 8041 and seems that is only preserved in the NE part of the feature. Had been partially excavated because part of the structure is outside the deep sounding, so is still on place. We basically remove the remains of the make-up (S2) of this superstructure, that was pretty similar to this other two make up layers excavated within the U23216. In that case we only documented one layer placed directly above the midden U23227.
So, according of what is visible and we know, the oven was built directly on the midden. For that they placed a make-up layer around which they build the dome, which seems to be made with orange clay (very similar that the ovens F579 in B17 and F8160 in B-161). Then they put a bricks around the dome, maybe to make the structure more consistence and be able to keep the heat longer??? Are the thick layers of make up in the earliest phases also related with this intention of keep the heat??? Anyway the structure is heavily truncated and had been only partially excavated. The remains of that unit still in situ, are also very damage.
The lines above are just a brief hypothesis of the possible construction process, but is something to be define in future seasons
