Unit 23233
Category: Layer dug in 2017
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Burial Fill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: burial; Deposition: homogeneous
Description: U23233 is foun in the S-SW of the 3x4 m trench, plotted within space 620
Discussion: This is the fill of burial F.8451. The feature has not been fully excavated as after the recovery of the skeleton, excavations did not continue in the South and excavators were moved to the North for the remaining of the 2017-season. The fill of this burial seems to extent beyond the current excavation pit and seem to be the same in colour and consistency as the fill of burial F. 8455. No burial cut for the particular burial F.8451 was found in the East or the North. It was characteristic that the human remains specialist had to excavate in the North, East, and South, prior to finally identifying the skeleton in the West of this fill. However, the excavator (NE) who replaced the current author suggests that she identified a cut in the South. The current author also suggests that this fill continues beyond and slightly below from where the excavations stopped, and should be considered to be contained within the same pit cut as F.8455. Namely, it is suggested that there is a wider pit cut into midden U.23227 (-see also description for this unit), the edges of which have been identified in the East, but not in the West, or the South, containing fill U.23233 and U.23255. It is suspected that the Northern edges of that cut were truncated from features dug through from above (such as F.8204 and F.8203, and others), and were further lost because of the use of pick axe in the beginning of the excavation of U.23227, because of the particular excavation aims. In the East, the cut is clear as the thin layers of midden U.23227 seem to stop abruptly close to Burial F.8455. However, a similar change in the fill or interruption of layers cannot be noticed for the South or the West of the fill of this burial. Completion of the excavation of the fills of both of these features (F.8455 and F.8451) would resolve this issue. (VK)
