Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: raised area (platform); Material: dark grey clay; Deposition: composite (floors/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation); Basal Spit: unpainted

Discussion: A grey packed layer similar to floor but sloping heavily. It was very hard, I had to hack it out. Below it was a softer but still very packed pure clay layer such as 30107, the packed clay above.

This unit seems to have been exposed for some time. It was very similar to a dirty floor. To me it seems like an accumulated surface, however packed hard by the weight of a post. Perhaps this was the real base of the post/pillar, or this layer represents the time when this feature did not contain a post but was used for other reasons in the in-between time of posts. I am inclined to think the later. But as the feature is not fully excavated 2013, we'll see. The character of next unit will tell more of this, I think.

Consistency: Compact, very hard to remove, had to use pick axe

Colour: Greyish brown

Texture: Clay

Bedding: Massive

Inclusions: Specks of secondary carbonates, salts, charcoal (?)

Post-depositional Features: None specific

Basal Boundary: Gradual and somewhat clear. Beneath is another layer of pure clay.
