Unit 30299
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: TPC
Interpretive Categories: wall bricks
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: brick; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: This unit was extremely difficult to recognize. It is composed of extremely burnt mudbrick and roof finials laid in it, over each in perpendicular directions. It seems to be put in on top of the floor makeup layer u.30273, suggesting these bricks may be from a later interior wal. They were extremely crumbly, and seem to extend past the S edge of the trench, although the erosion at this end made it extremely difficult to tell. In excavating this unit, we expected a rectangular wall deposit but soon realized that we had dug into some Neolithic mud-brick at the W edge and were coming down onto an oven from an earlier period (f. 7159). We then deduced that the bricks of u.30299 were not laid systematically on a flat surface or into an even cut but rather packed opportunistically into this oven and the jagged cut [30229].
