Unit 31212
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: Trench 5
Interpretive Categories: room fill
Data Category Information: Location: building
Discussion: The unit corresponds to a part of F3304 in B107. It was supposed to be a wall but we found out during excavation that it is apparently a filled area (many finds) in front of wall F2426. The sediments of this unit are pale gray with many inclusions of little spots of yellow clay, dark charcoal and clair brown and white plasters so the general impression was very colourful.
This unit contains a part of the hole documented as a posthole (U. 31197). The main idea was to have a better understanding of how F3304 and F2426 were interacting and to confirm or not the nature of the hole 31197.
We observed a big spot of brown-clair plaster (construction material) in the middle of the unit and a big layer of dark-red mortar at the bottom of the unit. White plaster was present by medium not so frequent spots.
As for the finds, the unit is filled with bones, pottery and groundstones.
Consistency: softy compacts sediments. One compact spot of mortar
Colour: clair gray with many little inclusions (black charcoal, yellow clay, clair brown and white plaster). Also dark-red for mortar.
Texture: silty clay except for mortar which is sandy and crumbly
Bedding: compound layered: clair gray sediments with inclusions and one layer of mortar at the bottom. Big spots of clair-brpwn plaster. White plaster of U 31197 (hole)
Inclusions: many inclusions. Very little spots of clay, charcoal and plaster
