Unit 31220
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: Trench 5
Interpretive Categories: mud brick + mortar of f. 3368
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: This is a mixed unit for the mortar and the mudbrick of f. 3368. Before I made the this section we didn't know what 3368 was. It appears that it's a double wall which is abutting the plaster of buttress f. 3363.
The interpretation is not so secure because there are a lot of animal burrows which disturb the area, especially the one that is situated at the exact place where we could have found a proof for two parallel walls instead of a double wall.
The mudbricks were very massive. I could remove huge pieces, but usually it comes off in a lot of small pieces. Same for the mortar even if it is less massive. Those two materials were very compact. Maybe it's not the exact same material for all the constructions.
Consistency: Mudbrick: firm. Mortar: compact
Colour: Mudbrick: dark brown. Mortar: greyish-white
Texture: Mudbrick: clay. Mortar: sand
Bedding: Mudbrick: massive. Mortar: layered
Inclusions: Mudbrick: rare small pieces of burnt mudbrick. Mortar: -
