Discussion: F.99 was removed revealing that it had been possibly keyed to the abutting wall. This unit (3125) is the removal of that floor level onto the floor below. The joining of these two floors produced a large amount of phytoliths, possibly straw used to join together two surfaces, as used in some areas of the world today. The unit also revealed several small and crossing cuts, also seeming to aid the joining together of levels/surfaces, though this later appeared to be mostly variations in the fill. Removal of the layer revealed a floor packing surface.

This patch was cut on all sides except where it abuts wall to S believed to have been 'scoured' at the end of the life-use of building 4. 

 

Recognition: bottom of F.99, though a small amount of overdigging had occured 

Definition: reasonably clear (see above) 

Execution: trowel 

Condition: fairly dense and hard 

Consistency: very hard and crusty at top, soft and claylike underneath 

Colour: 10 YR 4/3 brown (but also variable colours, 'red' grey) 

Texture: clay of various colours 

Bedding: massive 

Inclusions: charcoal 5 %, plaster 2 %, stone
