Unit 31554
Category: Cut dug in 2015
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: cut of pit
Data Category Information: Description: pit
Discussion: An irregular and extensive cut U.31554 had been uncovered in West-central part of Sp.531. It covered huge area and marked clearly digging activities that caused major destruction of the floor as well as SW- and NW - platforms (respectively: F.7880, F.7722). The actual circumstances and objectives of the undertaken proceedings in the past seem to be indicated by three circular depressions (cut U.31591, U.31593, 31200) recorded in Western and Eastern parts of the unit. judging by the collected evidence of the depth and post holes both of them (31591, 31593) might be regarded as post-retrieval pits whose presence mark evidently the placement of the wooden constructional elements (posts) set there vertically probably to support mud-brick structure or the roof.
The actual edges of the cut U.31554 were identified in eastern part of the feature F.7873 due to W-limit of the excavation area that constituted the wall of later building. Hence, one may imply that the rest of the cut most plausible as extensive as recorded one is situated westward. Nevertheless, judging by the collected so far data we may assume that the cut was executed in order to regain posts, concentrated in W-part of the sp.531, at the last stage of the use of B.132 during its demolition phase.
Problematic might be to ascertain the highest elevation point of the cut. The latter issue is caused by fragmentarily preserved plastered element that remained in situ in one piece recorded in W-section of the pit F.7873. Its truncation marked the actual outline of the cut and real scope of the ditch. Hence, the differences between registered already in 2015 an E-edge which is ca. 1010,77m – 1010,83m a.s.l. is quite similar comparing the elevation measurement taken from the fragmented plaster in W-section which was 1010,86m a.s.l.
Shape: irregular - registered only in its E - part
Sides: gradual in E-part, vertical in N- and S- parts
Base Break: sharp
Base: irregular due tu underlying earlier features, and additional depressinons related with post-retrieval proceedings (u.31591, u.31594, u.3200)
