Unit 31585
Category: Cluster dug in 2016
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: cluster of artefacts within NE part of pit F.7724
Data Category Information: Location: pit; Material: mix; Deposition: primary deposition; Basal Spit: pebbles, obsidian, shell, animal bones
Discussion: This Unit is identified by the intensity of artefacts coming from the infill. The infill U.31581 above U.31580 pit cut is same as the fill of this cluster. There was no obvious cut for the cluster. After finding of pebbles and some obsidian flakes mixed with soil in the north east corner of the unit U.31581, excavation in this part continued with leaf trowel and it is understood that in the north eastern corner, there was a cluster of artefacts consist of six pieces of pebbles, thirty two pieces of obsidian flakes and seventeen pieces of shells, some animal bones with a possible worked bone point. Other than these finds in the cluster, piece of spoon made of bone (X1) is found. After the finding of pebbles and some obsidian flakes mixed in the fill, group of obsidian flakes (photo no: DSC4502-04) and shells (DSC4510-13) are found on the same levels. Most of the shells were on top of each other. Also it is important to note that bone spoon was on the same level with shells. It seems that the purpose of this cluster might be an offering for the pit- building. For the possible interpretation of these artefacts, it can be said that since obsidian flakes and pebbles are concentrated in one place (all of the pebbles have the same size) they could be used for knapping.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
