Unit 32046
Category: Layer dug in 2016
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: infill of a pit
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: pit; Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion: U.32046 refers to the infill of a pit F.7740 which is centrally placed in Sp.531. This infill was compound and included small clay aggregates, plaster and small amount of charcoals. It was silty in general. While it was light grey and light orange in color, at some point (after 30 cm) infill changed and fill became massive ash till the bottom of the cut U.32047. This massive ashy infill is taken as a flotation sample (S3) and it is subsampled (S4) for phytholith sample. According to specialists, this ashy deposit represents different burning events from different activities. It included chaff, grain, weeds and some pulse. It was rich in residue most probably from fire installations. They were very well preserved. There were abundant phytholiths coming from different activities and mix of burning events is important to note here. Apparently, there was one lump of rock super melted over 900 degrees. Residue from this fill was referring multiple seasons like spring, late summer, autumn and winter. Considering the placement of this pit and different burning activities with mixed residue, the pit might have been used for some sort of commemoration ritual.
