Unit 32642
Category: Layer dug in 2017
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Hearth Base+make up
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: hearth; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: This unit belongs to the second phase of the hearth placed in NE corner of the building and was exposed directly below the base 32633. We use the same unit number for the base and the make-up.
The base is pretty compact, burn and with an orange/brown color, it was only 1 cm thick. The make-up was orange thick and very compact. Both elements were truncated in the NE for the retaining wall 32650.
We also remove with the same unit what it seems to be a reparation of the hearth rim for this phase, documented in the W part of this structure, closing the edge. We took special sample (s5) for that. This three elements (base+make up+ rim) were clearly built on the remains of the earliest phase of this hearth and abutting the oven's superstructure (U32632) were it was visible plaster.
Consistency: Very compact (both layers)
Colour: Brown/orange
Texture: Clay and sand. The base and the make up mostly clay, but the superstructre had more sand in the composition.
Bedding: Massive (both layers)
Inclusions: Not detected
Post-depositional Features: Salts
Basal Boundary: Levelled
