Discussion: Loose mortary constructional deposit in F.279. 

 

Recognition: Crumbly brown soil with dark clay aggregates. Very distinctive crumbly deposit, but pre-exc. I thought some other areas could belong which actually did not. 

Definition: See A). 

Execution: Leaf, trowel, spoon, brush. 

Condition: Hot, sheltered. 

Consistency: loose, friable 

Colour: 10 YR 5/2 greyish brown to 4/2 dark greyish brown, with clay aggregates 5 Y 2-5/1 black to 2.5 Y 2.5/1 black 

Texture: silty clay 25/75, +50% clay aggregates 0.5-1.5 cm 

Bedding: massive 

Inclusions: rare bone <3 cm; clay ball <5 cm; occasional/moderate roots, frequent phytolith 

Post-depositional Features: roots 

Basal Boundary: clear/anthropogenic/regular but angular, ie following straight and vertical edges as well as smooth sloping ones, because this feature is 3-dimensional and partly (as a result) being dug inside out, these boundaries can be seen from 2 perspectives, (3335) may have been moulded, or may have been slapped in against moulded items
