Area: North

Interpretive Categories: room fill

Discussion: We removed buildind material down to an ashy crumbly layer. Continued trying to expose wall plaster surface. On the top of the layer was a horn corn pieces we removed and tried to see if they were attached to walls but could not tell for certain.
17/7/99: Mira advised to extend this unit to include the same fill from the layer above the platform floor. This fill was the reminder of the sampling from the 1998 season.

Unit description: This is a small unit. Most of it is small pieces, up to 3 cm, nearly all sheep-size. There is no burning and little digestion. The surface condition is somewhat worn. More or less even body part distribution. This looks like fill. Then there are three horn core chunks, two of them crumbled beyond reconstruction. One is a small section of cattle horn core, another a relatively intact sheep horn core (but missing the base), and the third appears to be a partial (as recovered, at any rate) sheep horn core from the other side and probably the same animal as the one in better condition. The unit sheet suggests that these, at least the two crumbly ones, were on top of the layer of fill and may be a special deposit. Their surface condition is different and fresher, supporting this. Sample 1 >4mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded completely. This is a moderate size sample. It has some tiny crumbles of cattle horn core that probably belong to the chunk from the dry sieve. Otherwise, it is mostly small worn bits, mostly under 2 cm with a few somewhat larger. These are generally similar to the non-horn material in the dry-sieved sample, except there is some burning. There are a couple of fish specimens, and a couple of pieces of a small carnivore (badger?) that might be intrusive, as they have a somewhat lighter color; not very recent, though. Last number = 71
