Unit 3662
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: bin edge,platform edge
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: ridge; Material: pise-like; Deposition: heterogeneous
Dimensions: 0.14 x 0.08 x 0.07
Discussion: (3662) represents a small chunk of white plaster and a softer clayey construction material beneath that lay above the earlier more substantial platform edge/floor up to F.289 to the E. It was removed as a separate entity as it overlay the grey/bricky/ashy material which covered the surface to the W, which itself overlay the remainder of the plaster of F.289 and a floor which seemed to be continous with it. It is difficult to interpret it as there does not seem to be any associated structure still in existence. It could be that at one time it was part of bin 257 to the W, but was truncated by the cut for the post retrieval hole.
Recognition: A raised plaster ledge that was non-continous with the surrounding layers. A greyish/white surface with softer mixed material beneath.
Definition: Defined in places by salt encrustation/cracking.
Execution: Leaf trowel/trowel.
Condition: Dry.
Consistency: firm
Colour: white gray plaster 2.5 Y 8/1 white; softer fill 10 YR 6/2 light greyish brown
Texture: chalky clay plaster / silty clay softer fill
Bedding: compound layered
Inclusions: occasional flecks of clay in the plaster; flecks of clay, plaster and charcoal (3%) in the mixed softer material
Post-depositional Features: salt encrustation
Basal Boundary: a sharp/distinct/anthropogenic basal boundary, this was smooth and curved, lying over an earlier 'lip' feature to the E and N, and a more ashy floor-packing deposit
