Unit 3722

Category: layer    dug in 1998

Area: South

Site Sketch: Click here to open in a new window

Interpretive Categories: infill

Data Category Information: Location: between walls; Deposition: homogeneous

Dimensions: 7.9 m E-W x c. 20 mm - 50 mm wide x depth of wall 52

Discussion: Lots of small rodent bones were found in the very soft part of the wall fill. This part could have been an animal tunnel. The bones and surrounding soil were dry sieved (EH).

The unit itself is an infill between walls 52 and 286, clearly visible by salt deposition the infill is different in colour and in the density of finds to the wall 286, with a particular cluster of finds at the W extremity. It seems similar in some respects to the infill layer 3762, but SF doubts me greatly on this and I dare not argue. On reflection this unit does fade out before reaching 3762. So scrub the previous sentence.

Recognition: Diff. coloured + textured material between walls 52 and 286. Very soft, light brown/beige coloured + silty.

Definition: Boundaries recognised because they go up to 2 walls. Clear boundaries.

Execution: Trowel.

Condition: Dry.

Consistency: soft/friable

Colour:

Texture: silty but with sandy particles, particularly to W

Bedding: massive

Inclusions: charcoal 2%, micro fauna, bone, obsidian, clay ball

Post-depositional Features: roots + salt

Basal Boundary: constructional, gradual and distinct, sloped slightly to W and S, breaks down onto a smooth layer beneath

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
