Unit 3972
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: cap to oven
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: hearth; Material: pise-like; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 0.01 - 0.02 m thick
Discussion: Crust of light yellowish brown material, appeared to be a possible hearth surface, on excavation found to be overlying dark brown loose material, appears to be infill and visible around the edge a layer of lining material diving steeply downwards. So, (3972) may possible be some kind of collapsed? lining material, and this is an oven feature rather than a hearth. Also, probably ties in with 'hearth' units on the other side of the baulk to the E.
Recognition: Recognised on removal of (3968) dark brown burning showing around edge of (3972). (3972) distinctive yellowish brown appearance/crust.
