Unit 4199
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: brick
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: brick; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: It was quite difficult to note the length of bricks during excavation. They appear from the plan to be very long - ie just over a metre long, but I suspect that this was because the edges were difficult to see.
Generally the bricks + mortar were of consistent depths.
Recognition: distinguished from the mortar by identifiable whole bricks rather than by particular characteristics - ie very similar in appearance to mortar - thin salt/white material at interfaces
Definition: east - infill, south - mortar or cut, west edge wall 414, north - mortar infill
Execution: trowel
Condition: good
Consistency: firm
Colour: grey-orange brown
Texture: silt
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: very small flecks of charcoal (1mm) <2%, thin spread of black (charcoal?) and white plant impressions - phytoliths at north end interface with mortar, <2% bone (small) #some chunks of hard orange clay 1cm cubed
Post-depositional Features: salty interfaces
Basal Boundary: sharp - flat, paralell
